Mubare Gorilla Family

Size: 9 Members & 1 Silverback- Located in Buhoma, Mubare was the first group to be habituated in Bwindi and the habituation started in 1991 and this group received its very first tracking visitors in 1993.  This gorilla family is named Mubare group after the stunning Mubare Hills in which this group was discovered.

Habinyanja Gorilla Family

Size: 15 Members & 2 Silverbacks – Located in Buhoma, Habinyanja gorilla group were habituated in 1997 and received tourists in the year 1999. In the start it was a huge group, however a family was split from it named the Rushegura Group.  These two groups crisscross each other now and again and co-exist peacefully.

Rushegura Gorilla Family

Size: 18 Members & 0 Silverback

Rushegura Group is located in Buhoma and was habituated in 2000 and received tourists in the year 2002.  It is a huge group within the Buhoma area of Bwindi Forest.

Bitukura Gorilla Family

Size: 12 Member & 4 Silverbacks

Bitukura Group is one of the newest groups in Bwindi Forest and located in Ruhiija Sector of Bwindi. Its habituation started in July 2007.

Mishaya Gorilla Family:  Mishaya Gorilla family split due to family dispute with Nshongi Gorilla Family – which two still live within the Rushaga region in Southern Bwindi Forest.

Nshongi Gorilla Family: 

Size 36 Members & 5 Silverbacks

This currently is the biggest habituated gorilla family in Uganda with 25 members.

Nkuringo Gorilla Family:

Size 19 Members & 2 Silverbacks

This gorilla family comprises of 19 members and is a favorite to people who have tracked over one group.
